The muting function prevents interfering noise, e.g. when hot swapping guitars. As soon as the 6.3 mm SILENT plug is disconnected from the instrument, the integrated magnetic switch short-circuits the contacts.
The Neutrik silentPLUG® is a special version TS plug with an integrated switch that automatically mutes (shorts) a guitar cable to avoid annoying pops and squeals when hot swapping guitars. The integrated silent switch is based on the REED technology and guarantees a lifetime beyond 10,000 mating cycles.
